Microbiome testing is the process of sequencing bacterial genetic material from a small fecal sample. We can detect all known bacteria from your patient’s stool sample and then provide you with a comprehensive report. Testing a pet’s microbiome provides insights into their health. Then imbalances in specific gut bacteria can be addressed to help alleviate symptoms associated with a number of chronic health conditions, including digestive disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and skin conditions like atopic dermatitis.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is microbiome testing and what are the benefits?
What is the testing process like?
We provide everything you need to make testing your patient simple.
- Collect: Order a Microbiome Test Kit, collect a small stool sample, mail the sample back (prepaid envelope) to our lab.
- Analyze: We extract and sequence DNA from the sample to identify pet gut bacteria.
- Results: Once we’ve processed your sample we’ll email your report AND provide online access to explore, compare, and share patient results.
The test results identify the types and proportions of bacteria living in your patient’s gut, in comparison with our large and growing database of healthy pets. The report includes actionable insights to help you improve pet digestive health.
How long after antibiotics should we wait before giving the microbiome test or Gut Restore (FMT capsules)?
Please wait 48 hours after the completion of antibiotics before administering the Gut Health Test or the Gut Restore Supplement.
Can the patient continue taking probiotics when administering the microbiome test or Gut Restore?
Please stop administering all bacterial probiotics 48 hours before administering the Gut Health Test or the Gut Restore Supplement. The patient can continue taking S. boulardii as this is a yeast based probiotic that we do not see interfering with the Gut Health Test or Gut Restore Supplement
What if the patient cannot tolerate cessation of antibiotics?
Contact our Animal Care team to develop a protocol tailored to your patient.
Where do you get the material for fecal transplant capsules?
The donors for Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) Capsules are pets screened for health, age, fecal consistency, behavior, and microbiome composition (based on DNA testing). Donor samples are also submitted for pathogen screening (both DNA testing and culturing) to the Idexx Reference Laboratories, which has more than 15 years of genetic testing experience, stringent quality control guidelines, and well-validated standard operating procedures.
All donors are screened regularly for intestinal ova (parasite eggs) and parasites using a fecal float. In addition, we test for the presence of hookworms, roundworms and whipworms by ELISA.
Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) Donors: Cats
For cats, the donated fecal matter comes from healthy indoor cats that have not had antibiotic treatment in the prior six months, have diverse and species-rich microbiomes, are not overweight, and have no behavioral issues.
All feline fecal material is screened for the following: Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (CPE) gene, Cryptosporidium spp., feline coronavirus (FeCoV), feline panleukopenia virus, Giardia spp., Salmonella spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Tritrichomonas blagburni (formerly foetus)
Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) Donors: Dogs
For dogs, the donated fecal matter comes from healthy dogs that regularly go outdoors for walks, have not had antibiotic treatment in the prior six months, have diverse and species-rich microbiomes, are not overweight, and have no behavioral issues.
All canine fecal material is screened for the following: C. Perf CPnetEF Toxin Gene, C. Perf Enterotoxin Gene, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Canine distemper virus, Canine enteric coronavirus, Canine parvovirus 2, Circovirus K9, Clostridium difficile Toxin A, Clostridium difficile Toxin B, Cryptosporidium spp, Giardia spp, Salmonella spp.
A few months back, I found a sweet stray kitty that had terrible, uncontrollable diarrhea. He tried to make it to the litter box but the majority of the time he didn't quite make it. The only way we could hold him was to wrap him in a towel so we didn't get poop on us. I spent over $700 at the vet on dewormer, antibiotics, a variety of different food and several over-night stays. Nothing the vet did even slowed the diarrhea.
I started researching alternate options and ran across a story about Marigold (the shelter kitty that couldn't get adopted because of this same issue). I ordered the KittyBiome Gut Restore and within 2 days, our kitty had solid poop. I've never been so excited to see solid poop in my life! I am giving him the medicine every 3 days currently and he is still great. I feel like this medicine saved his life as he would have become an outside kitty if we had not found a solution.
THank you for this wonderful product!
This product is conjunction with the FMT capsules has truly been a lifesaver for my dog, Charlie a Lhasa Apso.
Thank you for providing dogs with an alternative to surgery.
Additionally, I have had the best customer service with this company than any other company in my entire life!! The employees of this company have answered too many of my questions to count in a quick and easily understand way! The information I have learned has been invaluable to me in being able to better care for my pet. The employees are friendly, kind, compassionate & really just amazing- so again I THANK YOU ALL!!!
The only complaint I have is that I didn’t know sooner because I could have prevented the extreme discomfort my dog was having crying at night due to stomach/gastrointestinal issues. Any this complaint is on me not on you! Charlie hasn’t cried one night since starting these products, his overall health continues improving daily including not only his gastrointestinal issues (upset stomach & diarrhea) but also his skin, hair & having a moist nose again.
I highly recommend these products and only hope others have the success I am having with my dog.
Excellent product but I’m a 77 year old widow and having trouble paying for it
My dog has allergies and is on a special homemade diet to manage them. However, she also has environmental allergies that kick in during the summer. We tried the Gut Restore, which gave her a severe allergic reaction. It didn’t start after the first dose, but when we went on the daily dose a week later she broke out in hives and she couldn’t take a step without scratching. The company was great and reimbursed me for the cost of the supplement. Most disappointing that it didn’t work for her.
A couple of years back my dog contracted Giardia. Long story short it was not picked up right away. Once treated he was testing negative. But he was not better! He is on heart medication and is 15 years old. Within the last year his issues went to kidney failure, pancreatitis and bouts of HGE. He has lost several pounds :( and several thousand dollars in ER Vets! They all had him at deaths door! It seemed to fall on deaf ears that I thought this was gastric. Then I found Animmalbiome! We started on a ruff start because of a zip code screw up and my dogs poo getting lost for weeks. I was pretty desperate to help my little guy out. They made it right and I started him on 60 day Gut Maintenance Plus. He is into week 7. I also read through the blog and read with interest about B12 and gastric repair. Thankfully the Vet okayed the plan for B12 injections for a couple of weeks. The combo has made a world of difference. His kidney values and pancreas are good. He is happy and energetic, eating well, gaining weight, and his poop is PERFECT! Id like to add that I do not believe I have every written a review but I feel its so important for the pet owners out there that may benefit from this! Thank you, Sincerely!
