Frequently Asked Questions
Is this supplement right for my dog?
Prior to using the supplement, we recommend testing your dog’s oral microbiome with a DoggyBiome Oral Health Test.
This supplement is intended to help support a healthy oral microbiome. Specifically, it helps reduce plaque and decrease populations of E. coli, which can contribute to health problems like bad breath and gum disease when present in large numbers.
How long should my dog stay on this supplement?
If symptoms do not improve within 60 days, see your veterinarian.
Are there any dogs for which this supplement is not recommended?
Dogs taking other iodine-based supplements or medications should not use the Oral Cleanse supplement. Not intended for use in dogs with hyperthyroidism.
Can I continue my dog’s other medications?
This supplement can be given with any other medications and/or supplements. While we’ve seen many dogs benefit from this supplement, we always recommend checking with your dog’s veterinarian before changing their regimen.
Can this product be given with other AnimalBiome supplements?
Yes, Oral Cleanse is compatible with all of AnimalBiome’s other supplements.
Where should I store Oral Cleanse?
Store in a cool, dry environment.
Are there any risks associated with this supplement?
While this supplement is intended specifically for dogs with an overgrowth of E. coli bacteria in the mouth, in rare cases, it can cause symptoms to worsen. If your dog’s symptoms worsen after beginning this supplement, stop giving the supplement until their condition stabilizes.
What is a prebiotic bacteriophage?
PreforPro is a powerful prebiotic made from a patented blend of phages that safely and effectively reduces unhealthy levels of E. coli in the mouth, giving the beneficial members of your dog’s oral microbiome more room to grow.
What does my dog’s mouth have to do with their overall health?
The mouth is the start of the digestive tract, so digestive problems can be related to problems in the mouth. For example, saliva can carry E. coli from the mouth to the intestines, where these bacteria can multiply in the gut. High levels of harmful E. coli bacteria can cause an imbalance in the gut microbiome which may lead to digestive problems like diarrhea. Oral Cleanse combines the oral health benefits of organic Icelandic kelp with a powerful phage that targets E. coli to promote daily oral health and to keep E. coli from taking up residence in your dog’s mouth.
Why would there be E. coli in my dog’s mouth?
In small numbers, E. coli is a normal resident of your dog’s gut microbiome, but when the population of E. coli grows too large, it can cause digestive problems and other health issues. E. coli is also a potential food-borne pathogen. E. coli can get into your dog’s mouth from things they eat, like food or poop, or from an overgrowth farther down their own digestive tract. For instance, gut populations of E. coli can increase after exposure to certain antibiotics, such as metronidazole.
Why Icelandic Kelp?
Icelandic Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed) is well-known for its prebiotic and other nutritional properties. This food-grade ingredient is safe for both humans and animals. What’s especially exciting about Icelandic Kelp is that it reduces plaque and tartar in the mouth, improving oral health.
This study showed that supplementing dogs’ food with Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed helps prevent the formation of plaque and calculus. In addition, the study found evidence that ongoing use of this particular kelp could also prevent bad breath and maintain good oral health.
And this study (also in dogs) showed that these healthy effects are a result of beneficial changes Icelandic Kelp causes in the oral microbiome.
